Scan Receipt

Scan Receipt helps fill in an expense from a receipt image. Expenses reads the receipt text and suggests details such as the amount, currency, merchant, category, date, and time before anything is applied.

This feature is available when your device and preferred language support the system language model used by Expenses. It is shown for expenses only, not income or transfers.

Scan a New Receipt

To scan a receipt while adding or editing an expense:

  1. Open the expense input screen.
  2. Tap the Scan Receipt button in the toolbar.
  3. Scan the receipt with the camera, or choose a receipt file on Mac.
  4. Review the preview.
  5. Edit any suggested details if needed.
  6. Tap Done to apply the details to the expense.

Expenses adds the scanned receipt as an attachment and uses it for the preview.

Scan an Existing Attachment

You can also scan a receipt that is already attached to an expense.

  1. Open the expense.
  2. Find the receipt image or PDF in the attachments section.
  3. Tap the Scan Receipt icon (a document with sparkles) on the right side of the attachment row.
  4. Review the suggested details and tap Done.

What Expenses Can Fill In

Scan Receipt can suggest:

  • Amount
  • Currency
  • Merchant
  • Category
  • Date
  • Time

If a merchant clearly matches one you already use, Expenses can reuse that merchant. If the merchant has a recent category, Expenses may use that category as the suggestion. You can still change the amount, currency, merchant, category, date, or time before applying the result.

If No Details Are Found

Receipt scanning depends on the text visible in the receipt image. If Expenses cannot extract enough details, try again with a clearer image.

For best results:

  • Keep the receipt flat and well lit.
  • Make sure the total amount is visible.
  • Avoid blurry photos, strong shadows, and cropped receipts.
  • Check the preview before saving.

Expenses may leave a field unchanged when the receipt text is missing or ambiguous.
